Who we are

Calix Atelier & Co. is a precision workshop based in South Pasadena, specializing in professional clarinet repair, restoration, and performance-focused setup. Each instrument is approached as a performance partner—refined for mechanical precision, tonal balance, and consistency so that it responds predictably and naturally to the player.

Working with performers, educators, and institutions, the focus is on thoughtful, detail-driven work, from full overhauls to subtle refinements. A curated selection of fully overhauled instruments is also in development, prepared to meet the demands of serious players.

The goal is simple: instruments and service defined by consistency, artistry, and reliability in performance.

About the founder

Calix Atelier & Co. was founded by James Calix, a clarinetist and technician whose work is shaped by both performance training and hands-on craftsmanship.

He began studying clarinet at age 10, first with his father and soon after with Yehuda Gilad. He later continued his studies at the University of Southern California under David Howard of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing with ensembles including the Debut Youth Symphony.

Following his studies, James founded a youth music program, where out of necessity he began repairing and maintaining instruments for his students. James later joined RDG Woodwinds Inc., where he apprenticed under Tom Yaeh, John Peterson, and Levi Tracy, refining his craft while working with professional performers and institutions.

His work has supported musicians from major orchestras and organizations across the U.S. and abroad, including players from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Opera, New York Philharmonic, and others, as well as leading conservatories and universities.

In addition to his technical work, James has given masterclasses at institutions including the University of Denver, Cal State Fullerton, Mälardalen University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Idyllwild Arts Academy.

After a period working in operations and completing graduate studies, he returned to clarinet repair with a systems-driven approach—translating the mechanics of the instrument into the language of performance.
